THE YEAR AFTER THE DROUGHT

Last year at this time, the lake was half empty and the Texas Hill Country was in a drought! Last Fall, August 2009, the rains began and over several months the lakes filled to the point of being completely full. With that memory of last summer still lingering in our minds, what would this summer look like? With Lake Travis full, would we face another dry summer with no rain? Would this be the year of a flood? (Too much water is not a good thing.)

June has been an interesting month. Many of the mornings have been cloudy. My memories of summer have been sunlight shining into the bedroom early in the morning beckoning the sleeping to wake! None of that. We have had cloud cover for most mornings.

Some mornings have been begun with rain or showers. Even today, my husband mentioned that it looked like it had rained during the night, the ground was wet.

Gray Puffy Clouds

VERY RARE ARE THE CLOUDLESS DAYS

The clouds have been beautiful. The puffy, large gray clouds remind me of the coast and the clouds over the ocean's horizon! Many mornings have begun with clouds, the skies clear for awhile, and then more clouds move in. Late afternoon and evening thunderstorms have been common during these past few weeks.

One recent evening, a system moved through that caused a torrential downpour. That same evening I heard that the town of New Braunfels received ten inches of rain. New Braunfels is just one hour south of us on IH 35. The Guadalupe River overflowed its banks and caused a lot of damage. Even San Antonio has had its share of showers during these last few weeks. On that particular evening, our area had rains of one to two inches with lots of wind and lightning.

Constant winds have been blowing in our area, sometimes for days. On clear days, it has not been unusual for the breezes to blow. Yesterday reached the 90's, but was not unbearable because of the breezes. I was working in the yard during the hot part of the day and thoroughly enjoyed the cooling breezes Mother Nature provided us.

What will our summer look like?

I am not one to make predictions. The weathermen have changed their minds about our summer several times. The first weather maps indicated that the summer would be drier than normal. I don't think so. I anticipate rain throughout the summer. The drought is over and we are due for rain.

The hurricane season is upon us. The National Weather Bureau says that we can expect a high number of hurricanes this year than last year. My experience is that Gulf hurricanes can bring rain to the Texas Hill Country.

Even with 90+ degree days, Summer 2010 is off to a good start! The grass and trees are very green, the ground is moist, and gentle breezes are blowing. Aaaaahhhh! Enjoy your Summer!

July 2010

The weather pattern of June has continued. We have had a few more sunny days in July. The lake has shrunk to eighty eight percent full mainly due to evaporation from warm temps. The rain showers have appeared several times late in the day, as the temperatures peaked in the heat of the day. Gulf weather patterns have provided us with several days of rain and clouds. Even now, Tropical Depression Bonnie is stirring up the moisture for us in Texas. Hurricane Alex was the first source of water for us in late June or early July. As of today, our local temperatures have not reached 100 degrees. If you are thinking about a trek through Texas, this might be a good summer to enjoy our fair State.

It is late June and the summer heat is here! There have been showers off and on. They seem to have ceased for the time being. Those afternoon showers caused by heat buildup seem elusive. I find myself watering the lawn in an attempt to keep it green. Seems like we all needs some Summer rainfall! Thanks for your comment cajunrooster and we will keep an eye on the weather!

We are dry in San Antonio on the west side of town. The rain has been more to the east. The aquifer is heading down fast and that's not good. I'd hate to see watering restrictions again. We do need some rain in the worst way. I have noticed that Austin has gotten a fair amount of rain and things are pretty that way. Just send some rain down here. LOL
