Snow in Austin, Texas?
Austin is located in the heart of Texas, the middle of this great state. We have a reputation for heat down here! Our winters are often mild and sunny compared to the rest of the nation. This year has been quite different - snow fell in Austin, Texas. Don't get me wrong, snow does fall in Texas. The panhandle gets its fair share every year. Dallas, Texas often has a snow storm or two. Because of the air traffic in Dallas, you often hear that the Dallas airport has been shut down because of ....... Central Texas is different. The cold weather patterns often stop short of us. We escape the bad weather because we are farther south than the big city of Dallas.
The area has had its share of rain and cold this Winter. Remember the hard freeze with 17 degree temperatures in the capitol city? Snowflakes have been spotted in various locales most winters. We also have a reputation for at least one ice storm each winter where we all have to stay home! The news is that WE HAD SNOW AND IT STUCK!
All over town, snowmen rose out of their wintery beds and came alive. Children of all ages made snow angels on the ground where smooth snow coverings abounded. Cars stood on the edge of the roads with as much as four inches of the wet residue clinging to their surfaces. There were reports of snowflakes as big as golf balls. They were very large, but golf ball size? Hm. In just a few hours, Austin was transformed into a winter wonderland.
You might be thinking that surely it has snowed in Austin before? Yes, but our snowfalls are usually years apart. Because of their time lapses, each time is a welcome change from our norms. Most Texans have a dream for a white Christmas and they often accompany those longings with a prayer or two just before Christmas. Could this be the year?
Snow in February, bluebonnets in March and April. What will the Spring weather hold for us? Mr. Weatherman says that the bluebonnet crop will be exceptional this year. What else is in store for us? We have just come through a drought, experienced snow, now what? Only time will tell.

My best friend lives in Austin and I still have friends/family in west Texas. This winter was crazy for everyone down there. I lived in Texas for sixteen years and never had a winter like the one they experienced this year. I'm so glad you documented it in your hub. It's something to remember. I'm sure ya'll will never forget.
It seems that the earth is changing. Where used to be cold becomes hotter and hotter becomes colder.. but this hub is really hot.
Nothing is as sweet as the unexpected. Refreshing hub PaulaK
It is crazy thinking snow in Texas. Nice hub.
Totally bizarre - and since I do a lot of typing for ya'll down there in Texas, I know all about the snow! Crazy weather and we here in Prinetucky are sitting in the 50's and 60's almost when it is supposed to be winter - no fair....my poor malamutes are sweating!
Houston also had snow here this year which as you probably know is unusual. We enjoyed the oddity as much as you did in the Austin area. You now have it on record as did I with these hubs. Nice!
Many years ago we were traveling across Texas and we had an area of snow. It was surprising as we didn't think it snowed there and the roads were very slippery. Hopefully spring is around the corner.
The snow was a gift from Canada...I just pray it did not hurt to badly...
Be blessed

Yes Emeraldkell, it has been a strange couple of years in the area with a drought, then rains, then another drought and snow in the winter. Who knows what this Spring will be like? Thanks for stopping by!
