Hutto

Hutto,Texas is a small farming town located to the Northeast of Austin. It is slowly becoming a bedroom community, trailing behind Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander and Georgetown. Hutto still has that small town atmosphere. Downtown Hutto is small, quaint place to visit for an afternoon of fun. Take Highway 79 east to reach the downtown area.

The first thing you will note are the hippos appearing on signs, on sidewalks, and in menus. The High School Mascot is the hippo. The Hutto Hippos are celebrated in the shops, the restaurants and even the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber sells hippo statues and proudly displays its own hippo in front of their office building.

Downtown Hutto

Downtown Hutto is only two blocks long. There are several restaurants, a flower shop, gift shop, bakery, and clothes shop along the main street. My recent visit was on a Friday afternoon and there were plenty of customers visiting the Cafe on the corner. We were the only tourists on foot, but several customers appeared in cars to visit the various shops. The gift shop was fun and I found several unique Christmas presents for family members.

Out For A Special Lunch

The Texan Cafe and Pie Shop drew us to Hutto for a visit. When you have good food, the word gets out. We had heard about the restaurant and had an opportunity for a special day trip. The Cafe is open from 11:00 am until 8:30 pm. Pie Happy Hour is from 3:00-5:00. During this time, you can get a piece of pie or cake and a drink.

The Decor

The Texan Cafe and Pie Shop is located in a very old building with a lot of personality. One wall in the restaurant is metal with various signs including a Route 79 sign. The Pie Shop is adjacent to the main dining room. The atmosphere is fun and festive with colorful tablecloths and dark wooden tables. The Pie counter is a natural draw for the customers with all of its cakes and pies on display for purchase.

You Must Try It

My husband and I highly recommend The Texan Cafe. The Specials Board has a wide variety of additional selections to the menu. The menu offers everything from burgers to veggie plates with a daily special five days a week. They are open for business on Sundays and closed on Mondays. Try a pie or cake for dessert. Our table sampled the rhubarb pie, the banana pudding and the coconut cream pie. I enjoyed a tasty dish of liver and onions that was cooked to perfection. I will definitely order it again. The prices are moderate and the service was excellent. They refilled our glasses promptly.

Take a drive to Hutto on your day off and enjoy the shopping and food. It is a nice getaway and will provide an afternoon of fun. Look for me at The Texan Cafe and Pie Shop. I am going back!

Another Visit To The Texan Cafe

This Sunday, the first week in August, my little family drove out to Hutto to enjoy a Sunday meal at The Texan Cafe and Pie Shop. We began our meal with fried green tomatoes. They were excellent and accompanied with ranch dressing for dipping. Our party enjoyed an assortment of tasty vegetables, the chopped steak, grilled shrimp and a light cranberry salad that was a special for the day.

For dessert, we partook of a blackberry cobbler, a sugar free butterscotch pie, and the favorite Ice Cream Sundae. Two of us are avid ice cream eaters. The menu specified three sizes of the hot fudge sundae and we chose the smaller version with only one scoop. Oh my, their ice cream scoops are really large. It came covered in delicious whipped cream and a cherry. Never do I NOT eat my ice cream. I was able to eat most of it, but had to leave some of it because my stomach ran out of room.

The service was great, there was a steady stream of customers and our visit was memorable. If you have not been out to Hutto, you must visit soon! I think I'm ready for my Sunday nap!

Small towns no matter where they are are filled with hidden treasures, people as a rule are treasures as well in these places and are more than willing to share their fair.
