How To Put Fresh Flowers In A Vase

i have a miniature rose bush beside the house that loves the Spring rains. Just this week, it began to bloom, displaying its bright pink flowers. As I passed by the window, the bright shades of color caught my eye. In mere minutes, I was gathering roses for my kitchen table. If you don't have flowers in your yard, buy flowers at your local supermarket and follow these same procedures to fill your favorite vase with color!

Cut a nice length of stem so that there is support for your flower. Unless you are going to float a flower in water, a stem is needed. The flower will continue to prosper as the stem drinks the water it sits in. Gather a substantial amount of flowers to complement your vase of choice. If you have large roses, you can probably use one or more flowers for your display. Trim the rough edges, removing any smaller branches from the main stem and strip away the lower leaves. If you are using flowers purchased from the store, re-cut the stems to fit your vase. A fresh cut is needed to keep them fresh.

Fill the vase three fourths of the way up. Add one to two teaspoons of sugar and stir. The sugar will help the flowers drink the water more efficiently. Arrange and place your flowers into your vase. Give the flowers some space if you can. Flowers touching other flowers usually die faster than those with some air space. Let your leaves naturally fill in the empty spaces, giving a natural look to your arrangement. When you are satisfied with the display, gently pour more water into your vase so that all of the stems are below the water surface. Over time, the water level will decrease. The stems should never be without water. Add water as needed.

If the flowers last for three days or more, change the water. Lift the flowers out of the vase, empty the water, trim off the end of the stem to keep them fresh, refill the vase with water and place the flowers back into the vase. Any wilted flowers can be removed during this process. Cut off or remove any wilted leaves.

Use fresh flowers to decorate. A pretty vase of flowers can brighten up any room. I have several vases to choose from. For long stemmed flowers, I use a tall clear vase. It looks more formal.
