Fashion Faux Pas For Men and Women's Socks

SHORT SOCK EXAMPLE

GET SOME DECENT SOCKS

We have all seen it. We are in a meeting, or watching someone sitting on a stage, and notice that there is a big gap between the person's pant leg and the top of their sock. The exposed shin of this individual glows white like a bright sandy beach and is almost blinding in the light. Sometimes the exposed skin is flaky and dry. You try not to stare, but are thinking to yourself - how tacky! Get a decent pair of socks!

Do you consider yourself a professional? Do you care about your appearance? Socks are an important part of your clothing! A good pair of socks is an essential item for both men and women when wearing slacks. We are not discussing slacks and sandals, but slacks with shoes and the need to look acceptable or professional when wearing them. Crossing one leg over the other can often expose a sliver of skin that might not appear at any other time. The length of the sock is key to your success!

My advice - buy socks that are long enough to cover any gaps between pants and shoe. Dark pants need a dark sock. Light pants require a light sock. Ladies, socks that fall down when you sit are not sufficient. Buy socks that have enough elastic to stay in place by themselves. I suggest a good knee length sock for ladies wearing slacks. If your socks are old and worn, invest in some new ones. The cost is minimal.

White socks and dark pants are not appropriate! Years ago, white sock were worn in lots of places with whatever. Style has changed. Appropriately colored socks are the way to go. Remember dark with dark and light with light.

Knee length panty hose are also considered a sock in this discussion. Panty hose that sag and hang anywhere below the pant hem are not appropriate for fashion wear. Replace those over-stretched hose with a new pair that function the way they were meant to! Knee length is best as the shorter version usually cause a gap if the hemline shortens when sitting!

AVOID FASHION FAUX PAS

If you have any doubt about your socks and the appropriate length, put a chair in front of a full length mirror, sit in it, and look for any gaps or exposed skin on your legs. If you see a gap or a white glare between your pant leg and sock, change socks! Don't forget to cross a leg and check for gaps. Don't have another pair, buy one or two or three! Don't be a fashion nerd! Get your fashion accessories quickly. Open your wallet and take care of business!

Good one Amber. That could be an entire hub in itself! Ha!

Sound advice. While you're on the subject perhaps you can find out why we always end up with a drawer full of odd socks!

LOL LOL Paula K this was great and much needed advice. I find my eyes wandering when I see the "too short sock" or the white socks and dark slacks. Michael Jackson would make me cringe with that God awful style.

Akirchner, you are so right about the dark sock and shorts. I am even to the point of disliking short white socks with shorts. I would rather see sports socks than anything with a pair of shorts, you know the kind you barely see poking above the shoe. You did good!

Shorts and black socks are also not appropriate! How funny men are....oh well - we had a friend who came over dressed in a camouflage shirt, super short gym shorts (not matching I might add) and black socks with tennis shoes - to go out to dinner! I'm not usually one to judge others but wow - I was tempted to sit at another table! (but I didn't) Good thoughts/good hub.

Pamela, thanks for stopping by! Breakfastpop, your comment makes me smile! I had a boss one time with the sock gap issue. We took up a collection to buy him some new socks! He quit wearing short socks thank goodness!
