City Cafe in Elgin, Texas

A Fun Stop
Thirty five miles east of Austin sits a small town known for its BBQ. We were there for another venue. City Cafe is located on Main Street in this little community, not hard to find. We ventured into the restaurant on a Monday evening after hearing how good the food is.
Driving east on Highway 290, we entered the downtown area around 7:00 pm, amazed to still see white Christmas lights lining the roofs of the buildings. The restaurant was warm and inviting on a chilly night.
Inside The Cafe
The pie case greeted us as we entered the front door. Making a note of the remaining pies, we were quickly seated in the next room, the dining room. A beautiful Christmas tree graced the room with its white lights and tall stature. The bricks in this old building are beautiful to see. There is an artistic flair on the walls with its paintings and murals throughout the shop. The armadillo was a unique drawing, located just inside the door and at only chair height. The large murals with the Cafe Logo were colorful, unique additions to the overall decor. Comfortable wooden tables of all sizes populated the dining room we were ushered to.
The Food
Service at this Cafe was excellent and the prices moderate. With few patrons on a Monday evening, the waitress was quick to respond to our needs.
Each of us ordered a different meal from the varied menu. Breakfast is served all day. The food was excellent and the vegetables were like grandma used to make. All of the portions were generous and our wait was minimal.
Each person in our party ordered dessert. After seeing the pies in the case, we could not resist a slice. The pie was disappointing. We decided that it's probably better earlier in the day. It would have been a better choice at that hour to have ordered a slice of apple pie or cheesecake rather than the meringue. I think you will agree that the pies are beautiful.
Walking back to the car after dinner, we noted the interesting shops along Main Street. It looks like a good location for a day trip in the near future. If you have the opportunity, drive out to Elgin for a special meal at the City Cafe. Take your family and your appetite, you won't be disappointed.

As a fellow Texan I sure do miss their barbecue. I'm from Houston and the smell permeates the entire city all day long. Great hub thanks for sharing.
