August 2010 Weather Is Cooking

Baby It's Hot Outside

Summer has finally hit the Austin area and we are feeling the heat. Most of August has been 100 degrees or hotter. There are no clouds in the sky today, so the chance of showers is almost nonexistent.

After cooler temperatures in June and July, we were getting spoiled around here! The occasional rains and cooler summer temperatures provided enough moisture to keep the area green. Currently, the showers have diminished and the Texas Hill Country is drying up.

Just a few days ago, in the middle of the afternoon, the sky began to rumble. Then it rumbled again. There was a flash or two of lightening and sky opened up and poured rain for over an hour. It was a most welcome break in the weather. Since that day, there have been no more showers.

The Lake Levels are suffering. Lake Travis is down below the full level by at least ten feet. Though we are not in a bad situation here, we would welcome a cool front. The weatherman was saying that a cool front will drop into North Texas in the next few days, but we are too far south to be affected. He laughed and proclaimed that the chances of a real cool front in August in the Texas Hill Country is next to impossible.

When the hot weather of Texas arrives, we live in the airconditioning. Most of the rooms in my house have at least a ceiling fan. Our bedroom has a ceiling fan and oscillating fan to keep the air moving, which is very important when trying to sleep or stay cool.

From the weather reports, much of the country is experiencing a wave of heat. I guess I should be grateful for the cooler first part of the summer. Today is my watering day. I was up early to set the sprinkler in the back yard. The afternoon is hot with no breeze. I am enjoying my day in the air conditioning and continuing to pray for rain and cooler temperatures!

Summer has been kind to us here in Utah. For the past 5 years we seem to only have summer and winter, skipping spring and fall altogether. Try to stay cool.

I hear you about summer hitting hard. Here in Cleveland it's been hot and humid, and grass looks more green than brown. I'm not going to complain though as I know winter is closer than ever now.
